Empanada Comparison Week: Julia’s Empanadas
My second stop for empanadas this week was at Julia’s Empanadas. This shop has several establishments throughout the Washington DC region. They specialize in traditional style empanadas. Compared to Panas, their menu selection is much smaller, but their empanadas are much larger for your buck. Their Chilean Style Beef, for example, measures about 4 inches wide and 7 inches long. I’ve never known an empanada to be that large. Just one of these is enough to fill you up.
Warning: Because they are so large, the bottom side of the Chilean Style Beef is very soft and can give way to the filling, so handle carefully.
Similar to Panas, Julia’s empanadas are also baked, but the filling is a bit moister. The beef is lightly flavored and comes with raisins, a slice of hard-boiled egg, onions and olives. The dough is soft, but firm enough to hold the filling.
Unlike Panas’, there are no dipping sauces, but in my opinion, these empanadas don’t need them as they are very moist inside.
