Red Hook Lobster Pound Food Truck ‘Rolls’ into Dupont Circle

Apr 7, 2011 by

Just as I was headed out to lunch, I got a call from a friend who happened to spot the Red Hook Lobster Pound DC food truck at Dupont Circle in front of the PNC bank. The home base of the Red Hook Lobster Pound is in New York City, but they have a food truck that roams the DC metropolitan area.

The Red Hook Lobster Pound is famous for its lobster rolls and the fact that they stopped by Dupont Circle was a unique opportunity. Just so you know how unique, food trucks rarely visit Dupont Circle, and when they do, it’s exciting for everyone.

The lobster rolls are $15.00 and they come in two styles: Maine and Connecticut. The Maine style is cold and contains mayonnaise. The Connecticut style is hot and comes with butter. I’ve never had a lobster roll before and I was excited to try it. I ordered the Maine style, which at the time I did not know is cold. Had I known before hand, I might have chosen the Connecticut style, but I’m glad I didn’t as this cold version was delicious.

The lobster meat was juicy, fresh and not heavy with mayonnaise, which can be a real turn off. The bread was lightly toasted with a savory flavor all its own. It was also light weight, but thick enough to hold the abundance of lobster meat. As a nice touch, this roll comes with a pickle.

My only beef was the fact that the bread roll itself was too small to accommodate the overflow of lobster meat, which made biting into it somewhat of a hazard. I was getting lobster meat everywhere, but in my mouth. A slightly longer bread roll would have done the trick. Is it worth $15.00? I say a little pricey, but worth it.

I sadly didn’t try the lobster roll when it came through Dupont. Sounds and looks delicious so I will be on the look out for it again. I’ll be sure to wear my lobster bib :) Thanks for the review!
